Last Friday, Michael J. Madigan, the longest-serving Speaker of the Illinois House, was sentenced by Judge Blakey to 7.5 years in prison and ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution. Madigan will join Democrat Ed Burke, another long-serving politician, who began his two-year sentence last fall. Although convicted for separate corruption schemes, both men benefited from a property tax system that favored them financially through favorable assessments for their clients.

"Let’s be clear, Madigan’s power was absolute," the statement read. "He controlled the money and his people with an iron fist. And they obeyed." His conviction on multiple counts of bribery, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit bribery marks the end of his political career.

Judge Blakey noted during sentencing that Madigan showed no remorse and described him as a liar with boundless arrogance.
