State Representative Brad Halbrook has voiced his opposition to the newly signed Fiscal Year 2026 budget by Governor J.B. Pritzker, which totals $55.2 billion. The budget is noted for its reliance on one-time revenues and includes tax increases and fund reallocations, marking a 38% rise since Pritzker's tenure began in 2019.

"Governor Pritzker signed the largest budget in Illinois history today, making life harder and more expensive for already cash-strapped Illinoisans," said Rep. Halbrook. He criticized the allocation of funds, stating it "spends millions on illegal immigrants, gives Democrats money for pork projects, gives lawmakers a pay raise, steals from the Rainy Day Fund, and continues to blindly give to non-government organizations (NGOs)."

Halbrook also pointed out that the budget did not address several key issues such as property tax relief, energy concerns, and the underfunded Tier 2 Pension system. "This is insanity! Our citizens are unable to handle any more tax increases," he stated. Halbrook accused Governor Pritzker of breaking his promise to reduce spending, leaving taxpayers responsible for what he describes as a recurring fiscal strategy.

The House Republicans had advocated against tax hikes and new expenditures while proposing various policies aimed at fostering economic growth for families and businesses. However, these measures were not brought forward by the Democrat Supermajority.
