State Representative Adam Niemerg sponsored House Resolution 411 to honor the Marshall City Band's 150 seasons. The resolution was presented to Mayor John Hesten and Band Director Heather Setzer during a celebration performance on June 6, 2025.
The band, under Setzer's leadership for over 24 years, has been active since its formation in 1875 by community members with musical interests. Historically, the band performed Thursday night concerts throughout the summer alongside other local bands such as The Citizen’s Cornet Band and the Chamber of Commerce Band.
Today, the Marshall City Band is recognized as one of Illinois' oldest continuously operating bands. It began as a brass cornet ensemble and now includes 55 musicians from across the Wabash Valley. These musicians dedicate more than 3,000 hours each summer to prepare for concerts. The band also performs at events like Memorial Day services at the Marshall American Legion and the annual July 4th celebration at Clark County Fairgrounds.
During the event, Rep. Niemerg read from House Resolution 411 highlighting the band's history. Mayor Hesten spoke about its impact over the years, while Marshall Township Clerk Art Miller was among those attending to express pride in this longstanding tradition.
