State Representative Brad Halbrook of Shelbyville expressed strong opposition to the recently passed FY26 budget, which was approved on a partisan vote. The budget, amounting to $55.2 billion, represents an increase of nearly $2 billion from the previous year and includes an additional $1 billion in taxes.

Rep. Halbrook criticized the budget's spending levels, stating, "The spending outlined in the FY26 Budget is completely out of control." He highlighted concerns about higher taxes and inflation, noting that many families and businesses are leaving Illinois due to these financial pressures.

Halbrook pointed out that under Governor Pritzker's administration, state spending has increased by over $15 billion in six years, marking a 38% rise. He described the budget as lacking transparency and imposing significant tax hikes on residents without offering substantial benefits.

He further criticized Democrats for approving pay raises for themselves and allocating $1.5 million per district for projects he termed as "pork," while Republican-represented areas were left with fewer resources. "As Illinois’ economy continues to lag well behind neighboring states, we continue to punish the residents that choose to stay with high taxes and little reward," Halbrook stated.

Halbrook concluded by asserting that the budget primarily serves Governor Pritzker and his core supporters rather than benefiting hardworking citizens of Illinois.
