State Representative Adam Niemerg has advanced two legislative measures to honor the contributions of two local individuals. House Joint Resolution 8 proposes naming Interstate 74 at mile marker 191 as the Trooper Corey S. Thompsen Memorial Highway. Trooper Thompsen, from rural St. Joseph in Champaign County, was killed in the line of duty.
"I am honored to sponsor this legislation to honor and remember the service of Trooper Corey Thompsen," stated Niemerg. He noted that Thompsen began his career with the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group before attending the Illinois State Police Academy. "During Trooper Thompsen’s service, he participated in several escort details across the State that included the president, the vice president, memorial services, and charity bike rides."
The second measure, House Joint Resolution 30, designates a highway intersection on Illinois Routes 39 and 43 as the Jackie Wayne “Jack” Steinman Memorial Highway. This honors Steinman's years of community service and military service in the U.S. Army.
Niemerg remarked on Steinman's accolades: "The recipient of many awards including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart for his service during the Vietnam War." He added that Steinman served twenty years with Willow Hill Elementary School in Jasper County and was involved with Potter’s House Ministry and VFW Post #1769 in Effingham. "Jack Steinman was a respected member of his community and deserves this honor to be remembered by the many people who knew and loved him."
Both resolutions will now proceed to the Illinois Senate for further consideration.
