Memorial Day serves as a time to honor and remember those who have sacrificed their lives in service to the United States. This day, once known as Decoration Day, originated after the Civil War and was declared an official federal holiday in 1971. Americans commemorate this day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, gathering with family, and participating in parades.

In Springfield, the Department of Veterans Affairs Camp Butler National Cemetery, alongside the Inter-Veterans Council of Sangamon County, held a Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at 2:00 p.m. The event included speeches, a moment of silence, a rifle volley, and the playing of Taps. Music was provided by the Springfield Municipal Band with the Land of Lincoln Chorus performing the National Anthem.

Miller stated, “We owe our service members who lost their life to protect our freedoms a personnel a debt of gratitude. Through their sacrifice, they have safeguarded the ideals of our founding fathers, saved our nation, and protected the innocent and liberated the oppressed.”

The State of Illinois provides various programs and resources for veterans and their families. These include federal, state, and local services on numerous issues. For assistance or more information on available resources, individuals can contact 217-508-4108 for support from constituent services.
