State Representative Brad Halbrook of Shelbyville has recognized the efforts of local police officers in preventing a resident from losing $250,000 to a scam. The Shelbyville Police Department was acknowledged by the United States Secret Service for their role in this case.

Sergeant Paul T. Bennett and Officer Joseph W. Houk were involved in assisting a victim who had been targeted by a phone scam. The victim had initiated a bank transfer to an online payment service under false pretenses of purchasing gold. With the collaboration of the United States Secret Service, the police department successfully halted the transaction, preserving the individual's life savings.

Representative Halbrook expressed his gratitude towards the officers, stating, “Thank you to Sergeant Bennett and Officer Houk for your quick actions to ensure this victim did not suffer a devastating financial loss.” He further commended their dedication and swift response that contributed to safeguarding community members.

In recognition of their commendable work, Rep. Halbrook presented certificates from the Illinois General Assembly's House of Representatives to both officers. These certificates were given as a token of appreciation for their outstanding performance in handling this case.
