Over the weekend, an article was published regarding an Assumption Alderman and his wife who were arrested. This led to a flurry of reactions on social media, ranging from defense of the couple to accusations that the article was exploitative.

One commentator remarked, “The fire department and city are not connected, you people should do your homework before posting stupid reports.” This prompted a clarification about the city's website content.

The City of Assumption's website states: “The City of Assumption Fire Department’s mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for all citizens and visitors from the adverse effects of natural and man-made emergencies. Our goal is to provide a protection program through a cost-efficient approach to emergency response, fire code application and public fire education.”

Despite this information suggesting otherwise, it turns out that the city does not have direct governance over its fire department. A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request revealed: “In response, the Assumption Fire Department is an independent local governmental body; although the City 'has' the fire department in the sense that the department is located within and provides fire protection to the City, the City has no governing authority over the Assumption Fire Department."

This response clarified that any indication on their website suggesting control over or connection with a city-run department was incorrect.

Additionally, there were comments questioning proof required for alcohol sales after hours. The Friendly Bar of Assumption received a citation and $300 fine for operating beyond permitted hours and selling alcohol during those times.

A FOIA response containing these details can be accessed online. It includes redactions made by East Central Watchdogs (ECWd), who noted their surprise at how public bodies handle personal signature releases.
