Herbert Palmer, an alderman and firefighter in the City of Assumption, Illinois, was arrested for DUI on May 4th, 2025. The arrest occurred after police responded to a call at a local bar at 2:13 am regarding an alleged battery incident involving his wife, Angela Palmer, who serves as the city treasurer.

According to the police report, Angela Palmer allegedly struck a patron named Kayla in the face without provocation. Witnesses confirmed this account, stating that "all three witnesses advised they were sitting at the bar when Angela approached Kayla and struck her in the face for no reason." Surveillance footage corroborated these statements by showing Angela approaching Kayla and striking her.

The incident raises questions about the bar's operating hours since City Code 3-2-15 mandates closure by 1 am. However, there is no indication in the police report of any code violations for being open past legal hours.

Herbert Palmer was reportedly leaving the bar with his wife following the altercation. A traffic stop ensued after their departure, although details surrounding its justification remain unclear. The report lacks information on what prompted running Herbert's vehicle registration or which motor vehicle code might have been violated. Herbert faces additional charges for failing to use a turn signal.

There is uncertainty regarding Herbert Palmer's current role within the City Fire Department. While some sources suggest he may still be serving as Fire Chief—a position he held as of December 2, 2024—this has not been officially confirmed. If true, it could present a conflict of interest given his status as an alderman.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
