State Representative Brad Halbrook, along with fellow Republican legislators, held a press conference in Shelbyville, Illinois to address concerns over budgetary pressures and spending practices. The group included State Representatives Chris Miller, Adam Niemerg, Blaine Wilhour, Jed Davis, and Marty McLaughlin.
Rep. Halbrook highlighted the issue of funds being awarded to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and non-profits by the state without proper oversight. "We are turning our attention to a staggering amount of taxpayer money—over a billion dollars—that’s being funneled to politically connected non-governmental organizations, or NGOs," said Halbrook. He noted that this was discovered not by government watchdogs but through efforts by concerned citizens and Republican legislators under the initiative known as DOGE—the Department of Government Efficiency.
Halbrook outlined five reasons for taxpayer concern: lack of transparency due to NGOs not being subject to Freedom of Information Act standards; vague budget language making it difficult for lawmakers to understand appropriations; expanded agency budgets beyond their original scope; undermining real charity by favoring politically connected groups over faith-based and private charities; and providing unchecked funding to favored groups while neglecting those in need.
With only two weeks left before adjournment, House Republicans have yet to see or hear details about the budget. "We have expanded agency budgets beyond the scope," Halbrook stated. He emphasized the need for open discussions involving Illinois residents on service funding decisions.
The representatives urged the General Assembly members to end what they termed frivolous appropriations and responsibly manage state tax dollars.
