The Sherman Fire Protection District has addressed concerns regarding the use of district property for a private car detailing business. The issue came to light following an inquiry about policies allowing such activities within district buildings.
Fire Chief Todd Masterhan responded via email, stating, "We were not aware of the use of district property for this purpose. The volunteer has been retrained on district policy prohibiting such activity and other policies of the district. Other personnel actions that may be taken are not for discussion here."
The situation arose after a tip-off revealed a fireman advertising his car/truck wash and detailing services at $200 each, with photos suggesting the use of the firehouse bay for these activities. A Freedom of Information Act request was sent to the district on April 28, 2025, seeking records of any approvals or policies permitting such use of fire district resources. The response deadline is May 5, 2025.
In response to inquiries, it appears that related posts have been removed from the fireman's Facebook page. This suggests awareness and action regarding the questions raised.
Such actions are considered an improper use of public resources, violating Article VIII, Section 1(a) of the Illinois Constitution as they do not serve a public purpose.
