Clay County ranks 79th in total sales taxes paid in Illinois during 2023

Clay County taxpayers ranked 79th in total sales taxes paid per county in 2023, according to Illinois tax records.

In total, residents paid just under $1.3 million in sales taxes during 2023.

The county also ranked 79th in the Prairie State the year before, with approximately $1.3 million spent in sales taxes.

The largest share of sales taxes paid by Clay County residents in 2023 came from the Special County Retailers Occupation Tax.

The Special County Retailers Occupation Tax, a crucial revenue stream, is primarily allocated for county governments' use.

As of 2021, Illinois was the highest taxed state in the US. A study from Wallet Hub found Illinois taxes were 39.83% higher than the national average.
