The Illinois Attorney General has reached out to the county Veterans Assistance Commissions with a letter acknowledging their recent appointments and outlining their responsibilities. The communication emphasizes the significance of their roles in providing essential services to military veterans and their families.
The letter states, "Our democracy is built on the idea of participatory government. You were appointed by your veteran service organization to represent them on the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) pursuant to the Military Veterans Assistance Act (MVAA). You serve a vital role in overseeing the Commission as it provides the just and necessary assistance and services to military veterans and their dependents."
Members of these commissions are reminded that they must adhere to specific legal requirements, including completing training under the Open Meetings Act within 90 days of appointment. Additionally, each commission must designate one individual for annual training, with completion certificates filed with the Public Access Counselor.
The letter also outlines other obligations such as submitting an annual report to the Governor by January 1st, conducting yearly audits in line with the Governmental Account Audit Act, and ensuring compliance audits per the Illinois State Auditing Act. Furthermore, each VAC superintendent is subject to an annual evaluation, with results shared among all commission members.
The Military and Veterans Rights Bureau (MVRB) offers support and resources for those involved in veteran affairs. The letter invites delegates, alternates, VAC members, and county officials to reach out for assistance or request presentations on relevant legislation through provided contact details.
