State Representative Brad Halbrook has expressed strong opposition to the "Homeschool Act," following its passage in committee despite significant public resistance. The bill, designated as HB 2827, requires non-public schools in Illinois to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). It also mandates that homeschool parents complete a "Homeschool Declaration Form" detailing personal information about their students and families. Non-compliance could result in truancy charges, potentially leading to fines or imprisonment.

Rep. Halbrook criticized the legislation as an example of excessive government intervention. He stated, "This is just another example of government overreach that pushes residents out of our state." He emphasized the potential negative impact on homeschooling families who have chosen this educational path to avoid bureaucratic hurdles in public education. "I support homeschooling families and will continue to fight against these costly, unfair, and intrusive mandates," he added.

The bill saw unanimous opposition from Republican committee members and sparked significant public backlash, with over 41,000 individuals filing witness slips against it. Additionally, numerous homeschoolers and their families gathered at the Capitol to voice their disapproval.
