FOIA Request to Clark County Sheriff's Office Regarding Inmate Immigration Detainers on February 18, 2025.
On February 18, 2025, we at East Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, submitted a request under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. The request was directed towards the Clark County Sheriff's Office in Illinois and sought information regarding inmates with immigration detainers issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
Specifically, we requested documents and records showing persons committed to their facility who have had an Immigration Detainer lodged against them since January 29, 2024. We also asked for any requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding civil enforcement that are reportable under the TRUST Act and/or the Illinois VOICES Act.
As part of our mission to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public, we believe access to these public records is essential. As a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit corporation that assists news media companies in investigating state and federal governmental agencies, we leverage Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to inform the American electorate about government actions.
Our request was made with the intention of shedding light on government activities related to immigration enforcement within correctional facilities. It is part of our ongoing effort to ensure transparency and accountability in all aspects of local government operations.
