State Representative Adam Niemerg is gathering support to oppose changes to the Illinois State flag. The current design, created by Lucy Derwent of the Rockford Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapter, has been in place since 1915. It features the state seal on a white background. The only modification was made in 1969 when "Illinois" was added at the bottom.
Niemerg stated, “The current flag has been our state flag since 1915 when Lucy Derwent of the Rockford Daughters of the American Revolution chapter placed the Great Seal on a plain white background.” He emphasized that this design has historical significance and should remain unchanged.
A petition initiated by Niemerg has garnered signatures from hundreds across Illinois and from individuals in 26 other states who have connections to Illinois. “In addition to the current residents of my district and across Illinois, people from 26 other states have signed the petition who have ties to Illinois and appreciate preserving our history and tradition,” Niemerg noted.
The Illinois Flag Commission is reviewing potential new designs for the state flag. Public voting on these designs is open until February 14, with results being compiled by the Flag Commission. The commission will present its findings to the General Assembly by April 1, 2025, which will then decide whether to adopt a new design or retain the existing one.
Niemerg encourages residents to participate in online voting to maintain the current flag design.
