State Representative Chris Miller has voiced strong opposition to legislation aimed at protecting undocumented immigrants in Illinois. House Bill 5164, which has passed the Illinois House and awaits a Senate vote, would make it difficult to track undocumented immigrants who commit crimes in the state. The bill allows individuals to change their names after residing in Illinois for three months and file motions to seal documents from public view.
"Pritzker continues to compromise the safety and security of Illinois citizens by protecting illegal immigrants and helping them fly under the radar," said Rep. Miller. "Let me be clear, HB5164 is another radical policy that puts Illinois citizens last."
The bill's implications have raised concerns among some lawmakers about its potential impact on public safety and taxpayer funds.
In addition to immigration issues, Illinois faces financial challenges with a projected $3.2 billion budget deficit for fiscal year 2026. Despite tax increases in FY25, the Pritzker Administration is seeking ways to address this shortfall by proposing cuts across state agencies.
"The radical Democrats refuse to work for the citizens of Illinois, but they continue to use their tax dollars to fund illegal immigrants and pork projects," stated Rep. Miller.
Major cost drivers contributing to the deficit include Medicaid expansions, increased funding for education, public safety reforms under the SAFE-T Act, human services programs, and rising group health insurance costs.
The legislative veto session has concluded in the Illinois House as lawmakers prepare for discussions during the Lame Duck Session early next year.
