State Representative Brad Halbrook has voiced strong opposition to a significant increase in wooded acreage assessments affecting some landowners in Montgomery County. The 1500% rise in assessments has been described by Halbrook as an "unacceptable" threat to property rights. He, along with other state representatives from the area, is urging the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners to find a swift and fair resolution.

Halbrook stated, “Private property rights are at serious risk. Forcing landowners to choose between enrolling in yet another government program or facing excessive taxation is entirely uncalled for. These drastic measures erode trust in government and place unnecessary burdens on property owners.” He emphasized his commitment to taxpayers and local control, noting that the Illinois General Assembly may not provide timely solutions for residents of Montgomery County.

He called on the county board to ensure that assessments remain fair and do not unfairly impact landowners. “Let’s stand up for property rights and prevent these excessive tax hikes from devastating our communities,” he said. Halbrook encouraged affected individuals to contact local officials and express their concerns, advocating for a solution that respects property rights and benefits all residents of Montgomery County.
