State Representative Adam Niemerg and State Senator Chapin Rose recently met with prison officials to discuss increasing reports of drugs entering correctional facilities. The meeting took place on Thursday, with Lawrence County States Attorney Brady Waldrop and State Senator Terri Bryant also in attendance. Concerns were raised about the safety of guards, staff, and inmates due to drug exposure.

Senator Chapin Rose emphasized the importance of addressing these issues: “We have had numerous family members, guards and staff reach out regarding ongoing safety and security concerns,” he said. “We appreciate what they do to keep the rest of us safe, so our goal is to address these issues directly, ask the right questions, and create an action plan that ensures our staff has every tool necessary to maintain the highest level of safety.”

The Illinois Department of Corrections confirmed a new mail process will be implemented in several months. However, Rep. Niemerg and Senator Rose are advocating for an interim solution to manage drug inflow during this transition period. This temporary plan would involve equipment and staffing adjustments coordinated with local unions and IDOC Administration.

Rep. Niemerg stated his concerns: “I have been receiving calls for weeks now about the increase in drugs into the correctional centers that are coming in primarily through the mail infused into the letters and paper envelopes and then smoked or ingested by inmates.” He noted that exposure to toxic fumes from these substances necessitates medical attention for affected staff. Niemerg committed to working with relevant departments to acquire needed equipment over the next seven months.

Further discussions are planned during the upcoming Veto Session when legislators return to Springfield. Those with information or concerns can contact Senator Rose at 217-607-1853 or Rep. Niemerg at 217-813-6036.
