When the country called, veterans answered with dedication and bravery. Their commitment to defending the Constitution has earned them lasting gratitude and support. Illinois House Republicans emphasize that honoring veterans should not be limited to Veterans Day; they deserve recognition every day. Policymakers are urged to ensure veterans receive the benefits they have earned.

Seven Republican legislators in the Illinois House are veterans themselves, bringing their experiences to legislative matters affecting veterans and military personnel. They address issues such as veteran suicide, homelessness, and healthcare, ensuring that veterans' voices are heard in the Illinois House of Representatives.

The Illinois General Assembly considers laws impacting veterans and their families while overseeing the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs through appropriations. House Republican lawmakers encourage Illinois veterans to share their experiences through a brief survey to improve services.

Representative Dan Caulkins served over 22 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Major with the Illinois Army National Guard. Representative David Friess enlisted in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic and later joined the Air Force Reserves during Desert Storm. Representative Paul Jacobs served in the Navy from 1965 to 1971 and has practiced optometry for 43 years in Southern Illinois.

Representative Wayne Rosenthal served for 30 years in the Illinois Air National Guard/United States Air Force, retiring as a Brigadier General. Representative Brandun Schweizer is a retired Master Sergeant from the Marine Corps who now serves in the Illinois General Assembly. Representative Dan Swanson is a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who served tours in Iraq before retiring in 2013. Representative Blaine Wilhour enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard during high school and served until 2005.

To honor veterans, individuals can share stories through the Illinois Veterans History Project or participate in wreath-laying ceremonies on National Wreaths Across America Day. Connecting veterans with support through initiatives like Operation Connect-a-Vet or volunteering for Honor Flight or Operation HerStory are other ways to show appreciation.
