A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Charleston City Council in Illinois on October 15, 2024. The request, made by us at East Central Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought detailed information about the city council members.
Specifically, we requested a list of all council members with details including their names, titles, years of appointment, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiry dates. This information was requested under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we believe that access to such public records is crucial. It enables us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include keeping the public informed about their elected representatives' tenure and terms.
We also highlighted our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. We believe that this fee waiver will facilitate our efforts in disseminating important information about local government affairs to our readers.
The Charleston City Council has yet to respond to our request. We remain committed to providing transparent and accountable reporting on local governmental affairs.
