A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Paris Finance Department on October 31, 2024. The request, issued by us at East Central Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought detailed records related to the city's sales tax.
Specifically, we requested an electronic format list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. The requested list should include the business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax paid by each entity.
In addition to this, we also asked for information about the total amount of sales tax that the city collected during the same period.
As journalists committed to transparency and accountability in public institutions, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that our role in disseminating information qualifies us for a fee waiver as media professionals under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.
We await a response from the City Of Paris Finance Department and will continue our efforts to provide comprehensive coverage of local government affairs.
