The Coles County Board has voted to amend the minutes from its May 10, 2022, meeting to accurately reflect the outcome of a failed vote concerning the compensation of elected county board members. This amendment follows a directive from the Illinois Attorney General’s office.

During the original vote on May 10, 2022, the proposal to approve compensation for elected board members did not secure a majority. Consequently, elected officials taking office after the November 2022 election lacked legal authority to receive compensation, and the county could not legally issue such payments. This also applies to those assuming office following the November 2024 election.

The Coles County State’s Attorney is currently reviewing this situation to determine further actions. It is acknowledged that there is no existing ordinance requiring compensation setting and that any previous ordinance has expired based on its language.

"Our position is that there should have been no compensation paid to any elected county board members taking office starting in December of 2022, and thereafter, since there was no authorization for their compensation," stated an official source.
