Shelby County is currently experiencing a surge of misinformation on social media, which some believe to be politically motivated ahead of the upcoming November election. The controversy began during a recent Shelby County Board meeting when Christine Matlock, a candidate for the county board, criticized the Chairman in her public comments. Her remarks have been described as opinions lacking factual support.

Following this meeting, social media platforms saw an increase in posts that appear to perpetuate narratives from the meeting. One post falsely claimed that late property tax payments would result in names being published in the paper immediately, although overdue tax bills are only reported on October 16th.

Another claim suggested misuse of funds by stating “6k+ to our previous SA for representing our Board Chair.” However, evidence posted online did not support this assertion. Invoices related to the matter were issued by Benford Brown & Associates, and there was no record of Chairman Orman requesting taxpayer money for personal legal expenses.

The misinformation extends to misunderstandings about county government operations and audit procedures. Criticism over delayed audits overlooks that such delays are not uncommon among public bodies. According to records from the Comptroller's office, Shelby County's situation is not unique or indicative of misconduct.

These discussions have sparked questions about accountability for spreading false information. Some observers note that individuals involved may have political motivations tied to efforts against Bobby Orman in the upcoming election.
