State Rep. Adam Niemerg encouraged his constituents to vote, stating, "Here's what you should know about the process to exercise your right and duty on National Voter Registration Day," in a Sept. 17 Facebook post.

"Are you registered to vote in Illinois," said Niemerg, State Representative, according to Facebook. "Here's what you should know about the process to exercise your right and duty on National Voter Registration Day. Please share this with your family, friends and neighbors."

In his Facebook post, Niemerg shared a link to a Fox 32 Chicago article that focused on how Illinois residents can register to vote on National Voter Registration Day. The report says that Illinois residents can register to vote if they are U.S. citizens who qualify for residency in Illinois and are 18 years old on or before the date of the next general election, which is Nov. 5, 2024. However, there are reasons an Illinois resident may not be allowed to register to vote. These include serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of conviction of any crime or being registered to vote anywhere else.

National Voter Registration Day started in 2012. The nonpartisan civic holiday involves volunteers across the country working to get Americans registered to vote; the website states that the organization has played a role in more than five million Americans registering to vote before elections. Partners are defined as organizations that set up voter registration tables in their communities for National Voter Registration Day; college campuses that have events to encourage people to register, and individuals who canvass their neighborhoods encouraging others to make sure they are registered to vote. According to the National Voter Registration Day website, the 2020 census revealed that one in four eligible Americans are not registered to vote.

Individuals in Illinois can register to vote online or update an existing registration. In addition to the previously mentioned qualifications for eligible voters, the Illinois Online Voter Registration Application website states that individuals must live in their election precinct for 30 days or longer leading up to election day.

Niemerg was first elected in 2020. He describes himself as a "fiscal conservative focused on reducing taxes and fighting for limited government and pension reform," according to his official biography. He is a senior claims adjuster with Country Financial and holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University.
