Chicago is facing a nearly $1 billion shortfall in its 2025 budget. Unlike previous years, Mayor Johnson will not have federal stimulus funding to address the financial crisis. Critics attribute the deficit to what they describe as incompetence and excessive spending on services for illegal immigrants, which they argue has adversely affected local communities.

Adding to concerns, Mayor Johnson has indicated that raising property taxes is still an option under consideration to manage the budget gap.

The situation comes amid broader discontent over rising property taxes in Chicago suburbs. Some residents argue that despite significant spending by Democrats, there have been minimal positive outcomes. Detractors claim that policies under Governor Pritzker and President Biden have led to a decline in the quality of life for Illinois residents. They contend that economic conditions were more favorable four years ago.
