High temperatures are expected to persist across Illinois today. Residents are advised to take several precautions to stay safe during the extreme heat.

Authorities recommend staying out of direct sunlight. If being in the sun is unavoidable, it is advised to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and a wide-brimmed hat, and to seek shade or use awnings as much as possible.

Overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities should be avoided. Wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible can help prevent sunburn.

Hydration is crucial; consuming plenty of non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated fluids, even without feeling thirsty, is recommended. Water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are considered best for maintaining hydration. Carbonated drinks should be avoided.

Residents should keep indoor lighting low or off, draw shades closed, and avoid using ovens to minimize additional heat inside homes. Ensuring good ventilation with air conditioners or fans is also important; however, it should be noted that fans alone will not prevent heat-related illnesses when temperatures rise into the high 90s.

Taking advantage of cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores or malls during periods of extreme heat can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours each day is beneficial.
