With the thrilling 2024 NASCAR Chicago Street Race scheduled for July 6-7 in downtown Chicago, extensive preparations are underway. The Grant Park 165 marks the second annual NASCAR Cup Series hosted through the city's streets. This event brings significant changes to daily life for Chicagoans.
Multiple road closures and parking restrictions around Congress Circle and Ida B. Wells Drive from Michigan Avenue to Columbus Drive are currently in place in preparation for the race. These measures are expected to remain until July 18.
In a recent online survey conducted by The Harris Poll, 39% of Chicago residents believe that hosting large events like the NASCAR Street Race benefits the city, while 32% see it as an inconvenience. Additionally, only 24% of respondents think this event is good for residents, and just 21% express interest in attending.
City of Chicago and NASCAR officials have developed a strategic plan aimed at balancing race activities with everyday commuting needs. Jose Tirado, Executive Director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, has been working on minimizing disruptions for residents and visitors. Certain areas such as Maggie Daley Park, Cancer Survivor’s Garden, and Museum Campus will remain open during this period. Pedestrian pathways like Columbus Underpass and the Chicago Lakefront Bicycle Path will also be accessible to ease pedestrian traffic flow.
Efforts are being made to ensure that all businesses and residences remain accessible throughout the event's preparation, duration, and teardown phases. These measures aim to provide a more enjoyable experience for both residents and visitors during the NASCAR Street Race period.
