State Representative Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) criticized the last-minute actions of the Democrats in the Illinois House of Representatives, calling their move a "typical playbook." Wilhour and his fellow Republican members voted present on a piece of legislation that would impact candidates for the General Assembly.

“Democrats followed their typical playbook yesterday, drop a major omnibus bill at the last minute that does several things without giving us any prior notice,” said Rep. Wilhour. “One of those things is to deny ballot access to candidates who want to be slated to run in the general election.”

Wilhour explained the implications of the legislation, highlighting the restriction it would place on the Republican Party's ability to slate candidates for legislative races. He criticized the Democrats' motives, stating, “This proposal is a blatant grab for more power to try to keep their supermajority. It is pure politics.”

In addition to the changes regarding candidates, Wilhour pointed out the inclusion of three non-binding referenda in the bill, which he deemed as unnecessary maneuvers by the Democrats. He expressed his frustration, particularly regarding a referendum on property taxes, stating, “If you are a sitting legislator and you need a referendum to tell you to lower oppressive property taxes in Illinois, you’re an idiot.”

Wilhour emphasized that the Democrats' focus should be on addressing important issues rather than playing politics. He highlighted the Republican Party's readiness to offer solutions for lowering property taxes, funding education adequately, and prioritizing essential services for the people of Illinois.
