State Rep. Adam Niemerg expressed his gratitude as Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield visited the Church of St. Joseph in Island Grove, Illinois for the opening ceremony of their Sesquicentennial Celebration. Niemerg shared, “I am very honored to have Bishop Paprocki visit my home parish for this milestone in the history of the Church of St. Joseph in Island Grove. It is good that we were able to provide Illinois State flags for the opening ceremony at the cemetery.”
The ceremony included placing Illinois State flags at the gravesites of the founding members of the Church of St. Joseph. Among those honored were Matthias Meinhart, Joseph Meyer, and Francis Dannan, three of the original 12 families who played a crucial role in the construction of the church and the formation of the parish in 1874.
The kick-off event commenced with a Mass of Thanksgiving led by Bishop Paprocki at St. Joseph Church, followed by a luncheon reception in the Church Hall. The celebration culminated in a ceremony at the St. Joseph cemetery, in front of the memorial for Father George Nell, the first resident pastor starting in 1922.
As the Sesquicentennial celebration continues, more events are planned for September. For further details, interested individuals are encouraged to reach out to a member of the planning committee.
