In a recent meeting, State Representative Brad Halbrook raised concerns about the high cost of state-funded preschool and daycare in Illinois. During the Appropriations General Services Committee session, Halbrook questioned the budgetary implications of Governor Pritzker's plan to provide universal preschool by 2027.

Halbrook pointed out the significant financial commitment involved, stating, "In Illinois we spend over $900 million just on preschool...That is an average cost of $11,609." He further highlighted the additional $150 million proposed by Governor Pritzker to extend preschool services to 5,000 more children, leading to a staggering cost of $30,000 per child for preschool.

Recent studies, including one conducted by Annenberg- Brown University titled "Why are Preschool Programs Becoming Less Effective?", have raised concerns about the efficacy of current early childhood education programs. Halbrook emphasized the importance of ensuring that taxpayer-funded preschools are effective, expressing the need to consider program specifics and outcomes for children, parents, and taxpayers.

The discussion surrounding early childhood funding in Illinois underscores the ongoing debate regarding the cost and effectiveness of preschool programs. As the state navigates budget allocations for education, stakeholders continue to evaluate the impact of financial investments in preschool education on children's academic trajectories and overall development.
