Rep. Niemerg Honors 1974 Basketball Champs at Lawrenceville High School

Lawrenceville High School paid tribute to its 1974 Class A High School Basketball Champions on Friday night, commemorating the 50th anniversary of their historic victory. The ceremony took place during halftime of the Lawrenceville game against Casey-Westfield, and it was an emotional event for all those involved.

Representative Adam Niemerg, a proud alum of Lawrenceville High School himself, took the opportunity to recognize the surviving members of the championship team, as well as the coach, the cheerleaders, and the school mascot. He presented certificates to each individual as a token of appreciation for their contributions to the school's rich basketball legacy.

Niemerg expressed his admiration for the 1974 team, praising their dedication and hard work. In his speech, he said, "It is an honor to stand here tonight and acknowledge the incredible achievements of the 1974 basketball team. Their victory not only brought glory to Lawrenceville High School but also united the entire community."

The surviving members of the team were overwhelmed with gratitude for the recognition. Jim Thompson, one of the players, said, "It means the world to us to be acknowledged after all these years. We put our heart and soul into that season, and to see our efforts being remembered and celebrated is truly special."

Coach Bill Johnson, who led the team to victory back in 1974, was also deeply moved by the ceremony. He shared his thoughts, saying, "Coaching these talented young athletes was an incredible experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their journey, and I am proud of what they achieved."

The cheerleaders and the school mascot, who played an important role in supporting the team throughout the season, were equally thrilled to be recognized. Cheerleader captain, Lisa Adams, said, "We were the cheerleaders for an extraordinary team, and being honored alongside them is a moment I will cherish forever. It was a true team effort, and I am grateful to have been a part of it."

The ceremony not only celebrated the past but also served as a reminder of the legacy that the 1974 team left behind. Their victory continues to inspire current and future generations of Lawrenceville High School athletes.

As the halftime ceremony concluded, the Lawrenceville community applauded and cheered for the 1974 champions, demonstrating their unwavering support and pride.
