State Representative Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro) recently visited the southern border in Texas, where he witnessed firsthand the alarming crisis unfolding. Rep. Miller expressed his concern about the security threat posed to Illinois and the entire nation. He stated, "Pritzker is helping the Biden administration funnel illegal immigrants into our great country with tax dollars and incentives. This is an invasion on American soil, a threat to our nation, and is undermining our sovereignty."
Rep. Miller also highlighted the role of Democrat-led cities, including Illinois, in encouraging illegal immigration. He noted that these cities initially welcomed and applauded the status of being sanctuary cities, but are now facing the consequences. Illinois has become a top destination for illegal immigrants, with many migrants choosing to settle there. According to data from New York City Hall, 2,369 plane tickets have been issued for migrants leaving New York City to make their way to Illinois.
The financial burden of providing services to non-citizens is taking a toll on Illinois. The state currently spends an estimated $2.9 billion per year on free services for non-citizens. Rep. Miller emphasized the strain this puts on Illinois residents and communities, stating, "Illinois resources are being drained and taxpayers are fed up with funding services to illegal immigrants." He further added that the solution to this crisis is simple: "close the border, build the wall, enforce our federal laws."
In addition to the border crisis, Rep. Miller raised concerns about the misuse of federal COVID relief funds in Chicago. Mayor Brandon Johnson announced his plan to use nearly $100 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to cover the costs associated with the influx of illegal migrants in the city. Rep. Miller criticized this decision, arguing that the funds should be directed towards businesses, students, and individuals who have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.
Illinois' business environment is also facing challenges with the implementation of new laws. The Paid Leave for All Workers Act, which took effect on January 1, has been particularly burdensome for employers. Failure to comply with this unfunded mandate can result in fines and civil penalties. Rep. Miller highlighted the negative impact this law has on Illinois' already high unemployment rate.
Furthermore, Rep. Miller expressed his skepticism about certain initiatives put forward by Democrats. He cited a proposed wind farm in Lake Michigan as an example of an ill-conceived idea. Rep. Marcus Evans (D-Chicago) introduced the bill, claiming that it would contribute to a global clean energy transition. However, Rep. Miller pointed out the contradictory nature of such plans and questioned the environmental impact of transporting wind turbine blades using diesel-fueled trucks.
In other news, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within corporations are facing budget cuts. Many companies have reduced their spending on external DEI groups by as much as 90 percent in 2023. This shift reflects a realization that these programs are costly and may not yield the desired results.
While addressing these pressing issues, Rep. Miller also shared some winter slow cooker recipes to bring comfort during the colder months.
As a state representative, Rep. Miller's office is available to assist constituents with any issues they may have when interacting with state agencies. The office can be reached at 217.508.4108, and appointments can be scheduled to meet with Rep. Miller at 1113 Lincoln Ave, Charleston.
Rep. Miller's visit to the southern border has shed light on the urgency of addressing the border crisis and its impact on Illinois and the nation. His concerns about the misuse of funds, burdensome laws, and ill-conceived initiatives highlight the need for responsible governance and a focus on the well-being of Illinois residents.
