State Representative Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) recently visited Full Armor Christian Academy in Olney to speak with students about the Illinois General Assembly and his role as a member of the House of Representatives. The visit was part of the students' education on the Constitution and the different levels of government in Illinois.
"It is important for young people to hear from actual elected officials to help complement what they are learning in the classroom," said Rep. Wilhour, who is currently serving his third term in the Illinois House. "A robust civics education curriculum is key for them to understand their rights and obligations to participate in the American system and preserve our great Republic."
During his talk, Rep. Wilhour discussed his reasons for running for public office, emphasizing his desire to combat corruption in Illinois and bring accountability to taxpayer dollars. He also gave insights into the legislative process and the various committees he serves on, including the Appropriations – Elementary & Secondary Education Committee where he holds the position of ranking Republican spokesperson.
Encouraging students to engage with the state government process, Rep. Wilhour urged them to follow the proceedings of the General Assembly and track legislation online at ilga.gov. He also invited them to register for a free electronic newsletter to receive legislative updates through the RepWilhour.com website. Additionally, he mentioned the opportunity for students to participate in the Page-for-a-Day program by contacting the Springfield office.
As a visual aid, Rep. Wilhour showed the students a map of Illinois, highlighting the 110th District he represents, and explained how the legislature operates in the state. The visit concluded with a "selfie" session, where Rep. Wilhour took photos with the enthusiastic students.
