Illinois taxpayers are projected to spend a staggering $708 million on the ongoing migrant crisis, according to a report requested by State Representative Halbrook. The report reveals that this significant expenditure has been allocated by various state agencies since August 2022.
Governor Pritzker recently announced an additional commitment of $160 million to Chicago for migrant support. This funding includes $115 million specifically designated for the city and over $54 million earmarked for asylee healthcare. These funds will be sourced from multiple departments, such as the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Department of Housing, Department of Human Services, and Department of Healthcare and Family Services.
It is worth noting that a portion of the $160 million commitment will come from redirecting $35 million in TANF block grant cash, originally intended for other purposes. This redirection of funds is not an isolated incident, as earlier this year, Governor Pritzker was found diverting money meant for rent assistance for Illinois citizens to address migrant needs.
However, the $708 million figure does not encompass non-citizen healthcare expenses, which are projected to exceed $831 million. This amount surpasses the initial budget allocation by an additional $300 million.
Expressing concern over these staggering figures, State Representative Halbrook remarked, "These numbers are alarming and likely much more will be spent than what is projected. The Democrats should be calling for the border to be closed and illegal aliens to be deported. Instead, they are redirecting money budgeted for Illinois citizens and asking for more money from the federal government to keep the migrants here. There is also a human cost to illegal immigration with payments to cartels for passage, sex trafficking, and forced servitude in off-the-book jobs."

The significant financial burden placed on Illinois taxpayers in addressing the migrant crisis raises concerns about the prioritization of resources. With millions of dollars being redirected from various areas, it is crucial for policymakers to evaluate the long-term impact on both the state's budget and its citizens.
It remains to be seen how these ongoing expenses will be managed and whether there will be a shift in approach towards securing the border and addressing the root causes of illegal immigration. As the situation continues to unfold, taxpayers and policymakers will closely monitor the allocation of funds and the impact on the state's financial stability.
