U.S. Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) strongly criticized a federal judge’s partial approval of a gag order on former President Donald Trump, arguing that partisan judges and prosecutors should not interfere with free and fair elections.
“Partisan, leftwing judges and prosecutors do not get to interfere in free and fair elections and then ‘Gag Order’ and SILENCE their critics. President Trump has the FIRST AMENDMENT right to expose these political activists pretending to be ‘unbiased’ when they hate Trump!” Miller said on Facebook.
A federal judge, Tanya S. Chutkan, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, has partially granted the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) request for a gag order on former President Donald Trump.
The judge limited the scope of the order, allowing Trump to make statements about the Biden administration and the DOJ but prohibiting him from making disparaging or intimidating statements about special counsel Jack Smith, his staff, witnesses, or court personnel.
Chutkan justified the restriction by emphasizing that First Amendment protections must yield to the administration of justice and the protection of witnesses, and she warned that sanctions could be imposed if Trump violates the order.
“Today’s decision is an absolute abomination and another partisan knife stuck in the heart of our Democracy by Crooked Joe Biden, who was granted the right to muzzle his political opponent, the leading candidate for the Presidency in 2024, and the most popular political leader in America, President Donald J. Trump,” a spokesperson for Trump said according to Daily Caller.
“President Trump will continue to fight for our Constitution, the American people’s right to support him, and to keep our country free of the chains of weaponized and targeted law enforcement.”
The gag order pertains to Trump’s indictment on charges regarding the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol brought in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Axios reported.
The charges were brought on Aug. 1 by the Biden Administration’s Department of Justice.
Trump has been charged with four criminal counts related to his actions following the 2020 election results, according to the New York Times.
The legal action represents an escalation in the effort of the Biden Administration to seek criminal penalties against Trump.
