Navigator CO2 has decided to withdraw its controversial carbon dioxide pipeline permit application in Illinois, just two weeks after facing rejection in South Dakota. The pipeline, known as the Heartland Greenway project, aimed to transport high-pressure carbon dioxide in liquid form to Illinois for underground sequestration.
State Representative Chris Miller (R- Hindsboro) expressed his firm belief that the withdrawal should be permanent without question. He raised concerns about the company's disregard for eminent domain concerns from farmers and landowners. Rep. Miller stated, "This company is not bothered by eminent domain concerns from many farmers and landowners. The Heartland Greenway pipeline project is part of a government agenda to reduce emissions."
Navigator CO2, based in Nebraska, claims to be addressing the myth of climate change. However, their approach has raised concerns about the potential risks it poses to private land and communities. These concerns are not unfounded, as demonstrated by a pipeline rupture in Mississippi in early 2020.
The rupture led to over 40 people being hospitalized and more than 300 residents of Satartia being evacuated. A staggering 31,000 barrels of CO2 were released, causing significant damage and endangering lives.
The withdrawal of the permit application in Illinois reflects the growing opposition and concerns surrounding Navigator CO2's pipeline project. It highlights the need for careful consideration of the potential risks and environmental impact of such projects.
As discussions around climate change and emissions reduction continue, it is essential to prioritize safety and the protection of communities and their land. The decision by Navigator CO2 to withdraw their permit application in Illinois is a step towards acknowledging these concerns and reassessing the approach to addressing climate change.
