Following the fourth indictment of former President Donald Trump, a number of lawmakers are sharing their thoughts.

“The left’s goal is to criminalize the exercise of your First Amendment right to free speech, especially political speech,” Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., said in an Aug. 15 Facebook post. “Rights are useless if you can’t exercise them. They are using fear of prosecution to chill any opposition to their agenda.”

The indictment in Fulton County, Ga., accuses Trump and 18 others of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results, according to an Aug. 14 New York Post report. The indictment, which includes prominent figures like Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows and Sidney Powell, alleges multiple charges against Trump and his associates, sparking a vehement response from the former president on social media as he denounces the charges as part of a “witch hunt.”

Miller included an X post, formerly Twitter, by Charlie Kirk.

“This is an actual line from the Georgia indictment,” Kirk said on X. “This is not a criminal case. It is a bid to nullify the United States Constitution.”

Kirk linked to a screenshot from the indictment in which prosecutors note an ordinary piece of communication from Trump’s Twitter account was part of an alleged conspiracy.

“Act 22. On or about the 3rd day of December 2020, DONALD JOHN TRUMP caused to be tweeted from the Twitter account @RealDonaldTrump, “Georgia hearings now on @OANN. Amazing!” This was an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy,” the post reported.

GOP lawmakers have rallied behind Trump as he faces his fourth indictment, accusing President Joe Biden’s administration of using government as a weapon against him, another New York Post report said. Trump, along with 18 of his close associates, was indicted on racketeering charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, stirring staunch support from Republican figures who argue that this is a continuation of partisan attacks against him.
