Darren Bailey is advocating for the state’s southern half to would be outmigrants.

Bailey, born and raised in Louisville, and graduated from North Clay High School, has always been proud of the south side.

“I’m just going to lay this out there…” Bailey, a former state senator and GOP candidate for governor, posted on Facebook. “Before you make plans to exit Illinois, consider Southern Illinois! It’s a busy day in Clay County. 2A classes in the GOP headquarters, 'very appropriate ', a new spa and boutique, as well as a new restaurant, Southern Comfort Cafe coming. Rotary Interact students are supporting a mission to get water to those without in Africa. And of course, Cindy is making final preparations for her luncheon. It’s a great and safe way of life!!!”

Illinois has been experiencing steady outmigration. In 2022 the state lost the second most residents. “Illinois has had nine consecutive years of population loss – the second-longest streak in the nation, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates,” Illinois Policy wrote. “The No. 1 reason United Van Lines was given for people leaving Illinois was jobs, with more than one-third of respondents listing it as a primary reason ahead of family and retirement. Housing and employment opportunities have both been made worse by poor public policy in Illinois.”

Metro East GOP activist Jennifer Korte said the weakening of government in the state is part of the reason behind the exit. GOP members are hopeful that conservatives will pick up locally elected seats in the spring elections. “When our schools weaken, our communities weaken, and we will continue to see an outmigration of families and businesses. It is time to restore local control of schools to the communities who have a vested interest in seeing the schools succeed,” she told Metro East Sun.

State Rep. Kevin Schmidt (R-Millstadt) said the state has “structural” hurdles to clear to make the state attractive for Illinoisans to remain in place. “Illinois still has the worst credit rating of all 50 states. The Land of Lincoln continues to be a leader in outmigration, and we are losing major employers Caterpillar and Boeing. We need to stop ignoring the structural problems that have led to job loss. We should be a destination for jobs and opportunities. Poor policies and bad leadership are hurting our state. We deserve better.”
