In his Facebook post, Neimerg shared an image from a piece published by the Council of State Governments. That piece focused on an Illinois law that requires the state to divest from banks and companies in Russia. According to CSG, House Bill 1293 requires:
"State colleges and universities must disclose endowments and donations provided by Russian companies,” Niemerg says on Facebook. “A new state-level task force will work to close loopholes in state law and practices that individuals, including Russian oligarchs, can exploit to launder money via purchases of high-end real estate. Another task force will explore policies to protect Illinois elections from possible Russian or other foreign interference."
“It’s time we do the same to China,” Niemerg said.
House Bill 1293 became Public Act 102-1108 upon passage. It was filed in February 2021 by Emanuel Chris Welch, and was approved by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Dec. 21, 2022.
Niemerg was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 2020. He now represents the 102nd District.
