In a Dec. 12 Facebook live event, Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) encouraged his constituents to fill out witness slips for HB5855, a measure that would ban assault weapons.

“Fill out your witness slip for HB5855. Prepare to stand firm!” said Bailey.

In a Facebook Live attached the to Facebook post, Bailey made a longer statement about the legislation. 

"It's time to say enough is enough and it's time to save this constitutional Republic for our grandchildren." Bailey said. "Right now as we speak House bill 5855 seeks to ban certain types of firearms, bans certain kinds of magazines, bans the sale, the manufacturer, the trade of anything. There are some situations where if you own a particular type of firearm you will not be able to give it to your children as an inheritance; that's how that's how ridiculous this is."

House Bill 5855 would require that the Division of Criminal Investigation of the Illinois State Police conduct investigations as provided by law, including, but not limited to, investigations of human trafficking, illegal drug trafficking, and illegal firearms trafficking. Under the law, the Division of Criminal Investigation would coordinate strategy pertaining to firearm-related intelligence, firearms trafficking interdiction, and investigations. It would also mean that individuals under 21 who were not an active duty member of the United States Armed Forces or the Illinois National Guard would need parental consent to obtain a Firearm Owner's Identification Card.

According to NBC Chicago, if this bill becomes law, Illinois will join seven other states that ban assault weapons in at least some capacity, including California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. 

Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) is the chief sponsor of the bill.
