A SMART STEP FORWARD

Coming from a small town, Alana Olson was worried she’d be lost in a larger post-secondary school. Drawn to Lakeland College by its size and the promise of a basketball scholarship, she found that college could be more than a place to excel in athletics and academics – she found it was a place to belong.

“Lakeland was the perfect environment for me to transition from high school to post-secondary. Increasing my involvement in the campus and community allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for everything Lakeland offers students.”

Alana quickly immersed herself in campus life, living in residence and working with the Students’ Association.

“Being able to develop relationships with everyone on campus is beneficial in so many ways,” says Alana, a third-year guard for the Rustlers women’s basketball team. “The faculty have been the most outstanding part of my journey at Lakeland. The professors I have taken classes from are not only incredibly skilled in their fields, but they are also approachable and personable.”

By starting her post-secondary education in university transfer, Alana has grown her confidence and built foundational skills she’ll use beyond Lakeland as she continues to work towards her goal of becoming a physician.

“Having support from faculty and other students allowed me to believe that I was capable of so much academically and in the community – I don’t know of many other institutions that would give that level of personal support."
