It’s that time of year again when we get to come up with clever costumes and get the kids ready for trick or treating and Trunk or Treat, costume parties and candy overloads.
Halloween is one of the most celebrated events in the country. Parades are everywhere, from small-town America to the extravaganza, the Village in New York City, where some of the most elaborate costumes can be witnessed.
Here in Marshall, Illinois, we will not be outdone by places like Chicago, LA, or NYC. We may be small, but we have lots of Halloween fun to participate in.
Halloween Event at Mill Creek Park: Saturday, October 22
Start the festivities by spending the weekend before Halloween at Marshall’s Mill Creek Park.
A spooktacular good time will be had by all.
Held at the Mill Creek Park Campgrounds, the event includes a costume contest, trick-or-treating contest, and campsite decorating contest. Make a weekend of it by camping out at the park and making your campsite the scariest, funniest, or weirdest to win.
Event Schedule:
- 5:30 pm: Costume Contest
- There will be kids, adults, and group divisions with a prize for the 1st place winner in each group.
- 7 pm: Campsite decorating contest – Prize for 1st place winner
- 6 pm-8 pm: Trick or Treating at the campground

Not into camping? Go “hunting” around the spookiest locations in Clark County.
Clark County Fairgrounds Scavenger Hunt – Saturday, October 22
Register at the fairgrounds from 8 am to 10 am. There will be raffles and vendor booths as well. Cost: $25 per vehicle.
Start the day at the pancake and sausage breakfast for only $5. Service begins at 8 am, and you can enjoy breakfast without doing the hunt.
There will also be a vehicle decoration contest with a $10 entry fee, and the judging is at 9:45 before the start of the hunt. The first clue will be given to the participants at 10 am.
Proceeds benefit the Marshall Schools Foundation to help raise money for teacher mini-grants.

Halloween is Happening in Downtown Marshall
It’s time for Trunk or Treats – Saturday, October 29, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
Take the family to downtown Marshall where there will be over 50 trunks set up for visiting. Get your free Halloween Bag first by stopping at the Marshall Chamber of Commerce Trunk. They are donated to the event by Shore-Murphy and Associates Insurance. Once you get your bag, visit any and all of the trunks to get candy and goodies from the local businesses, churches, organizations, the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, and even the City of Marshall.
We are excited to announce that WTWO TV will be in attendance this year, and they are bringing a photo booth. Get your picture taken in your costume and make a memory! They will be in the grass at the Southeast corner of the Courthouse square.
If you need something besides sweets, The Marshall Church of The Nazarene will hand out hot dogs and water from 3:30 to 5 pm or until they run out. They will set up a warming station near the chamber office if the weather calls for it.
The Costume Contest happens right after Trunk or Treat.
At 5 pm, The City of Marshall’s Fall Frolic will take place. Costumes are judged in different age groups.
The different age categories are:
- Newborn to 1 year-olds
- 2 to 4 year-olds
- 5 to 7 year-olds
- 8 to 10 year-olds
- 11 to 14 year-olds
- 15 and over
- Groups/families
The Main Event – Halloween Night!
This year, Halloween falls on a weeknight. Still, in keeping with tradition, there will be citywide trick-or-treating on holiday from 6 pm to 8 pm. So, don’t put those costumes away until after Halloween – Tuesday, October 31.
We hope you will participate in some or all of the planned activities. We want everyone to have a fun and safe Halloween and for those visiting for the holiday events to get to know and love Marshall as much as we do.
