On Saturday evening, October 1, 2022, the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Ave. in Onarga, IL, in reference to a reported home invasion/person with a gun. Upon their arrival on scene, Sheriff's Deputies were speaking with the alleged victim's daughter when a single gunshot rang out from inside the garage. Deputies attempted to secure the scene awaiting additional officers and subsequently entered the residence, however it was determined that the suspect had fled out a back door immediately following the incident. In speaking with the victim, it was learned that their daughter's ex-husband, 29-year-old Jordan R. Johnson of Kankakee, IL, made entry to the residence and assaulted them with a firearm. The suspect allegedly threatened to kill the victim and reportedly fired one (1) shot at them during a brief altercation inside the garage. Officers from numerous surrounding agencies responded to Onarga and assisted in a search for the suspect. At approximately
10:45 p.m., the suspect was located near the area of Bork Nurseries and fled on foot through a bean field.
Officers pursued Mr. Johnson through the field, during which time he produced a gun and fired one (1) shot, resulting in a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound. No police officers discharged their weapons during this incident. Emergency medical personnel, who were on standby, immediately responded to the scene and pronounced Mr. Johnson deceased. At the request of the Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police Investigators and Crime Scene Technicians responded to process the scene and conduct the resulting investigation. Following the incident, the victim was taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and released.
