The Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 school board held a meeting highlighting its students’ academics.

“Really excited to share that 88% of the students who attended demonstrated growth in those competencies,” Christy Hild, the assistant superintendent for Student Services for the district, said during the meeting. “So really really good, that a great percentage, we're happy with that.”

The school district has five schools for Pre-K to high school and a student career center.

The first update was on the summer learning outcomes. The summer sessions were kids working on catching up on competencies from the previous school year. From Williams elementary, there were 94 kids that attended with 12 teachers and 2 special ed teachers. There were 55 students from Riddle Elementary with similar staff to student ratios. Breakfast and lunches were served at the schools as well.

Myradiolink reported the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation awarded the district’s Riddle Elementary school, Williams Elementary school and Mattoon High school grants for their respective family engagement efforts.

The second item on her agenda was presenting an action item to the board to increase their Skills USA program to be featured at the LIFT campus, the district’s tech center school. It would also use it as an accreditation center, which is a benefit because it would be testing with industry recognized credentials and trains students in current and wanted skills. The board voted to say yes to the plan.

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Mattoon CUSD2 Board of Education Office on 17011 Charleston Avenue in Mattoon.

The final part of her presentation was curriculum updates. While there was no action taken, many of the topics were introduced so board members could talk about them and ask questions before voting at the next month’s meeting. In this portion there were discussions of creating a publication of how and what materials are chosen by the library, the district’s ad program and possible expansions.
