Students in Lakeland College’s newest program – barber certificate – will be job ready in four months.
Launching this fall at the Lloydminster campus, the barber certificate program covers a range of techniques in hair design, including haircutting, styling, grooming and shaving. Students will build their resume as they learn and work with real clients during their 147 hours of public clinic time in the campus salon.
“Lakeland College’s barber program offers a fresh approach to the re-emerging barber sector in the hairstyling industry,” says Janice Aughey, dean of the School of Health, Wellness and Human Services. “With our experienced and talented instructors, students will gain confidence and aptitude while working with real clients and perfecting their skills. We’re excited to expand our health and wellness programs with this in-demand program.”
Barber students will put their education into action throughout the four-month program developing key skills in haircutting, including moustaches and beards, shaving and trimming, scalp shampooing, treatments and massage.
Lakeland’s barber program qualifies graduates to complete Alberta’s barber apprenticeship program. As apprentices, they’ll need an employer to complete 1,450 hours of on-the-job training before they can write the journeyperson exam. Following the apprenticeship program, graduates could further their education on the business side by earning a blue seal. Barber graduates can also expand their skills by taking Lakeland’s hairstyling program, where they will learn chemical treatments and styling with hot tools.
Graduates will be prepared to excel in their career as a barber, barbershop owner, mobile barber, barber salesperson and more.
