An Illinois Democratic Party representative’s comments about the tragedy that unfolded during the Waukesha Christmas parade north of the state line has drawn stern criticism from a Republican member of the General Assembly.
According to the New York Post, Mary Lemanski, the now-former social media director for Democratic Party of DuPage County, posted, then scrubbed a Tweet saying the perpetrator ramming his vehicle into the parade "was probably just self-defense.”
Another Tweet of Lemanski’s that read, “Living in Wisconsin, he probably felt threatened,” was also deleted as of Nov. 28.
“Who are these lunatics? The same people that support ignorant and dangerous policies that let a maniac like this out of prison to wreak havoc on a community and destroy lives,” State Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Edwardsville) wrote on Facebook.
Plummer made it clear that he isn’t criticizing all of DuPage County.
“DuPage County is a great place full of decent people – I have family & friends that live there," he continued. "This does not reflect the people of DuPage County. It's time to get rid of these left-wing extremists that are destroying that great county. This tragedy in Wisconsin is beyond words and then...to see this...good grief.”
The incident on Nov. 22 claimed the lives of five people and injured dozens.
Fox News reported that authorities questioned Milwaukee resident Darrell E. Brooks, who has a criminal record that dates back at least 20 years.
The Democratic Party of DuPage County issued a statement after the tragedy decrying Lemanski’s posts as “callous and reprehensible,” adding it has “immediately severed all ties” with her.
“She does not speak for us and we unequivocally reject her statements about the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Waukesha. We as a party denounce violence of any kind. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families impacted by the heinous act, which shocked and saddened us all.”
Plummer, who took part in Sen. Steve McClure's listening tour recently, also called on his constituents to take action after the Prison Review Board released an inmate who had killed a police officer, Metro East Sun reported.
“We need elected officials who stand up for their communities, not kneel down to leftist party leaders and campaign donors," Plummer posted earlier this month. "This reckless administration is allowing violent criminals out of prison left and right."
