City of Mattoon issued the following announcement on Aug. 7.
Mattoon Mayor Tim Gover and Charleston Mayor Brandon Combs have announced that Coles County Fireworks scheduled for August 29 has been cancelled.
"Because the safety and security of our citizens is our first priority, we are sad to announce that the Coles County Fireworks scheduled for August 29th have been cancelled. The reality is that large gatherings are under the current guidelines from the Illinois Governor's office are still very challenging, making this event unrealistic." said Mayor Gover.
Mayor Combs added that "No one wants to cancel community events because we know they are important to our quality of life, but under the circumstances we simply had no option but to cancel. We know some will be disappointed, but please know we didn't make the decision without careful consideration of all involved."
Coles County Fireworks 2021 are scheduled for July 4th, 2021.
