Illinois State Senate District 55 issued the following announcement on March 24.
Each-and-every day, essential employees continue to risk their health to provide for the health and safety of our state’s residents. Those who can are tasked with working from home. Schools are closed, and childcare is limited. Some businesses have had to close their doors. Many citizens are looking at the future with trepidation, concerned about providing for their families. These are trying, uncertain, and complicated times.
In light of our current situation, I am urging the Pritzker Administration to take into consideration the daily realities facing the people of this state and push back the state income tax deadline for Illinois taxpayers.
The federal government has already pushed back the income tax filing deadline from April 15 to July 15. Illinois should do the same.
In a time in which residents are struggling, we should be seeking to relieve the hardships placed on taxpayers, not adding to their burdens. The very least the government can do is recognize the economic difficulties this crisis has put on many in our state and delay the income tax filing deadline.
