This month's sixth graders are Gavin Houchins and Drew Damery. The seventh graders chosen are Tatum Falk and RJ Cook, and the eighth graders selected are Morgan Malone and Cyrus Smith.

CAMMS Flag Crew:  Our local VFW trained a few students to correctly raise and lower our flag. Our plan is to organize a team of students to care for our flag daily and pass along the important knowledge of how to respectfully handle this symbol of our nation. We appreciate the guidance of Norman Bethard and Jerrit Medler!

First Lego League:  On Monday, the First Lego League team presented to the students at Gregory Intermediate. The 3rd through 5th grades learned about the Robo Raiders and about FLL. The students did a great job explaining the tasks required and the preparation that goes in to competition. We look forward to working with our future Robo Raiders!

Student Council:  In April, our student council students attended the Illinois Association of Junior High Student Councils State Convention in Springfield, IL. The students raved about the fun they had, as well as how great the speakers were. They heard presenters speak on leadership and positive choices. Thank you to Mr. Marcure, Mr. Cook, and Mrs. Koonce for your leadership this year!

6th Grade Field Trip:  On Thursday, our 6th grade class visited the St. Louis Science Center, where they viewed an IMAX movie about protecting the Panda species. Afterward, they explored the Science Center and had lunch by the dinosaurs. After lunch, the class headed to the City Museum where the students and teachers explored the interesting architecture. A great time was had by all!

Spring Music Concert:  The students put on a beautiful performance. I'm always amazed at the talent we have, and I love to watch them grow that talent through the year. Thank you to Mr. Elam and Mr. Parker for your hard work, and your dedication to the music programs at CAM!

8th Grade Farewell Party:  The 8th grade students had a great turnout for the 8th grade party, which was put together by parents and organized through community donations. Thank you to everyone that contributed! This is a great 8th grade class, and we at the MS will sure miss having them around! Good luck to the Central A&M Class of 2022!

5th and 8th Grade Orientation:  This has been a big week of orientation for our Raiders. Yesterday, 5th graders toured the Middle School and had lunch. Today, our 8th graders ventured to the high school to have a tour and lunch. The kids have had a great time, and they are ready to make the move!

Vocational Exploration:  On Thursday, Chelbi Williams, Central A&M alumni and Global Project Manager at GSI, spoke with our sixth grade Language Arts classes about the importance of using appropriate grammar in the workplace. She worked with students on resume & application practice, public speaking, and proper email and social media use. The students were engaged and had a great time! They have even asked to practice the tools she shared in class!

Flex Enrichment students took a walk over to the water plant to learn about what Jeremiah Risley does for the City of Assumption. This was such an informative and awesome tour. The students got to see inside the water building and learn about what all of the tanks and gauges are for. The students learned about chlorine and fluoride and the importance of having the water treatment plant and people like Jeremiah that keep our water safe and great tasting. Jeremiah even walked the students through a water test to see the "hardness" in our water.

During FLEX Enrichment, students were able to hear Alex Stringer, CAM Class of 2003, speak about nursing, his education, his experiences as a flight nurse, and volunteering as an EMT/Paramedic.  They were also able to watch an emergency helicopter land and ask questions about the mechanics and gear.

On May 16th, Nick Sloan, CAM Class of 2000, shared his experiences and training as a Lineman for Shelby Electric.

Women in Agriculture Series:

We kicked off our Women in Agriculture Showcase during our FLEX Exploration. All students are welcome to attend these presentations, and the focus is on local jobs that may not typically be pursued by our female students. We would like to showcase these career opportunities to our students and make them aware of the opportunities that are located right in our own back yard. Women working in the agriculture field have volunteered their time to present to our students over the next month.

Our first presentation was given by Kandy Smith, a production supervisor, Angel Mann a Production Technician, and Colleene Bettinger a Quality Team Leader all from GSI in Taylorville. These ladies shared their expertise in areas of production, quality control, safety, and electronics. The students were very interested in the training and possibilities for these careers. It was interesting to hear about the number of jobs available right now in our area! Thank you for sharing your time and talents with our students!

Andrea (Corzine) Sloan, Class of 2003, owner of August Creek Farm and partner at Cypress Grove Belties, presented for our second session of our Women In Agriculture Showcase! She spoke with our students about her family's farming history and her education and training. Mrs. Sloan discussed internships and the importance of gaining experience. She introduced the students to Community Supported Agriculture and the vegetables she grows on her 2 acre farm. She also discussed running a farm store and meat delivery service.

On May 11th, Emily Adcock, Marketing Manager at GSI in Assumption, came to speak with our students through our Women in Agriculture Series. Emily discussed the aspects of marketing and communications, as well as the skills and education needed to work in the field. She shared her road to working at GSI, and her history in agriculture. Students learned about the marketing they follow on social media and through advertising, as well as how their current courses are teaching them valuable skills for this career.

On Monday, May 14th, Sarah Holthaus Minott, CAM Class of 2002, visited the Middle School to discuss her experience with H&M Farms, our local pumpkin and Christmas Tree Farm. She shared about the growing process, the business side of farming, and her family's story.

Upcoming Recycling Program:  Next school year, our Middle School students will be participating in a recycling contest through the City of Assumption. Each grade level will be collecting various caps and lids, and the class with the greatest amount of pounds donated will be the winner! We are giving you a heads up, in case you would like to participate and collect over the summer! Acceptable caps/lids include those on a butter tub, coffee can, yogurt lids, medicine, drink bottles, milk jugs, detergent, squirt condiments, ketchup, etc. We cannot accept any cap with metal, pumps with metal springs (like lotions), fast food drink caps, no lid or cap over 8" in diameter. These recycling donations will go toward free benches or tables to be used throughout the community.

CENTRAL A & M HIGH SCHOOL

By the time of the Board Meeting on May 21, the 26th graduating class of Central A&M High School will have completed the ceremony. I am really proud of this group of seniors, and I look forward to their futures with excitement and anticipation. They are a group we send off with pride, as they have represented our Raider Nation well. My belief is that they will continue to be wonderful representatives of our communities.

We have been having exit interviews with the seniors the past two weeks. It is interesting to hear what they think about their experience at Central A&M. It is also so wonderful to hear how they enjoy our staff and all the work they do. In the June Board report, I will include a list of seniors and their plans for right after high school.

Here are a few other notes from the High School:

Very proud of Mallory Burgener, who has earned a Section 16 Reporter position. Leadership from another in our strong FFA program. Congrats, Mallory!

Congratulations to Raider Nation Junior Yeager Minott, who earned a trip to Washington D.C. through Shelby Electric Cooperative in June.

Enjoyed some quality time with seniors Trinity Hilton, Peyton Kelso, Austin Lay, and Brett Zindel at the College Signing Day program at Richland Community College.  First, we had lunch in Decatur, then on to Richland, where Raider Nation Class of 2016 member Taylor Vidmar organized a nice program. Celebrating our wonderful Raider Seniors!

When it is a nice day, Raiders need to go fishing! Congrats to Connor Hutchins and Austin Sloan, who placed 6th out of 39 teams at the Chatham Open on Lake Sangchris.

Introducing the 2018 Central A&M High School Prom Court: Alaina Burgener, Brooke Friesner, Trinity Hilton, Riley Black, Ried Morrell, and Jameson Smith. Great representatives of Raider Nation!

Congratulations to Raider Nation Boys' Basketball Coach Rob Smith! Coach Smith was named an Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Class 1A! The program under Coach Smith puts developing quality young men at the top of the list -- as great coaches do! Congrats, Coach Smith!

Congratulations to Trinity Hilton, who was honored at the Illinois Principals Association Abe Lincoln Region Student Recognition Breakfast. The event, held at the Wyndham Hotel in Springfield, honored several students from area schools. Students heard from IPA State President Hattie Llewellyn and IPA Legal Counsel Brian Schwartz. Trinity, the daughter of Scott and Kim Hilton, plans to attend Indiana State University in the fall. Congrats, Trinity!

We are very proud of our three Raiders who came to the aid of this lady. The third Raider was sophomore Keegan Waterman. Connor, Griffin, and Keegan showed what we expect in Raider Nation. This means more to us than All-Conference, All-Area, and All-State honors. This is All-Humanity!

Such a joy to be invited to the annual awards banquets at Central A&M High School. Tonight, we celebrated the FFA. This program, led by Mrs. Betsy Burgener, is a halllmark of Raider Nation. Our students gain so much accomplishment, confidence and job-related skills from this group. And, as it was stated by several of the seniors passing the torch tonight, it is a family.

Thanks to Leann Estrada, Monsanto, and our local police chiefs!

On Friday, April 27, six Monsanto employees, Assumption Police

Chief Brian Wade, and Moweaqua Police Chief Roy Maki, conducted a Seat Belt Safety Check at the Central A & M High School. As checks were conducted, those wearing their seat belts received a bag of Smarties with a “Smarties Wear Their Seatbelt!” card. Those who were not wearing a seatbelt

received a bag of Dum Dum suckers with a “Don’t be a Dum Dum, Wear Your Seatbelt!” card. Information along with rubber bracelets were also handed out. Parents, faculty and students were surprised by the check. 199 - Vehicles were checked; 348 - People (driver and passengers); 325 - Wearing seat belts; 23 - NOT wearing seat belts

Congratulations to our bass fishermen yesterday at the IHSA Sectional at Clinton Lake Ross Sloan and Eric Paradee finished fourth as a team, making them an alternate for the state tournament. Ross also hauled in the 2nd largest bass of the day at 7.1 pounds. Connor Hutchins and Austin Sloan also fished for Central A&M.

Blessed to be the Principal at such a school with incredible community support. Several community members attended the Central A&M High School Awards Program May 9 to honor Raider Nation students with academic awards and scholarships. We will post all the awards winners later, but here are several pictures from after the program. After the department and individual awards, nearly $40,000 in scholarships were awarded, with the potential for much more as students take advantage of multiple years on a few scholarships. Thanks to all of those who remember Raider Nation as a place to begin a scholarship.

Enjoyed a wonderful Baccalaureate Service Sunday evening. Thirty-two members of the Class of 2018 listened to scripture readings and a message from Pastor David Ball from Locust Grove Church. These Raiders are ready with the 4 P' s for life!
